APG was engaged to support Civic Nexus in the replacement of nine escalators at Southern Cross Station, Melbourne, one of Australia’s busiest transport hubs.

Southern Cross Train Station

Improving safety and traffic flow at one of Melbourne’s busiest stations.

The project forms part of a broader initiative to upgrade ageing vertical transport infrastructure, delivering safer, faster and more reliable systems while improving energy efficiency and long-term performance. To minimise structural impacts within the existing station, the works involve in-truss modernisation, allowing the new escalators to be integrated within the current infrastructure.

APG has played a key role in progressing the project through the preconstruction phase, coordinating the head contractor tender process and recommending the preferred delivery partner. In parallel, APG has supported the development of comprehensive project management plans and documentation to ensure alignment with the Department of Transport and Planning requirements and the station’s operational framework.

Given the complexity of working within a live, high-traffic transport environment, extensive stakeholder coordination has been required. APG has worked closely with Civic Nexus, the Department of Transport & Planning, Metro Trains Melbourne, V/Line and Southern Cross Station management to manage interfaces, secure approvals, and prepare the project for the safe commencement of works while minimising disruption to daily operations.
